[VAM] Movin’ On
Here is one of the other mini-epiphanies I’ve had about the development of Vegas After Midnight:
I want to create this thing. I need to create this thing. I must not let it fall to the wayside. I don’t care what the final outcome is in terms of VAM as “product” – I have to bring this project to fruition because I want to play it. All else is gravy.
And that means I can’t rely on the energy, inspiration, motivation, enthusiasm, or schedule of ANY OTHER PERSON except myself. Not Leah. Not David. Not Daniel. Not any of the friends who are cheering me on or the peers who are curiously waiting. Only myself.
I have to drive this thing home. I started it, and I have to take responsibility for finishing it. And I’m going to go ahead and make the VAM that I want to play in, the way I want to play it. There might only be two other people on the planet (or maybe not even two) who will be interested in it once I’ve got it done to my satisfaction, but it will be what it will be.
No more excuses, no more waiting around for other people to motivate and energize me. I’m moving forward. I’m putting on my Dean Martin suit, hopping into my beat up ‘66 Mustang, and gunning it down the extraterrestrial highway toward the edge of the map where madness reigns supreme and hope and luck are dangling like two fuzzy dice off of my rear-view mirror.
The Week That May Be
I’ve been working hard to try to get a consistent pace going here on the Monkey, and I plan to continue that effort. But I also have a Vegas After Midnight writing goal to achieve this week and I’m going to focus my hobby/creativity time on that for the next 3 to 4 days, so I’m not sure how much time I’ll have to do my Monkey journaling until that’s done. I’ve got about 4 half-finished draft posts in my draft hopper, and who knows what else I’ll run across that might inspire me to want to share something, so who knows? But this week, in the creative writing department, VAM takes precedence.
In the mean time, Canon Puncture #64 was released earlier today, so if you’re inclined, you can get a little Mick-fix (and a Rich-fix, and a Judd-fix) listening to that. Whatever you feel about Canon Puncture’s recent episodes, I’d like to encourage you to listen to #64. We really had fun recording it and I think that it comes pretty close to what we want to do with the show’s main segment – which is to talk about our gaming experiences as inspired by some cool and interesting blog or forum posts that we run across. In my opinion, we’ve hit on a formula here that will be entertaining, informative, and generally positive for listeners while still being natural and fun for the Canoneers.
So, there’s the Canon Puncture sales pitch. Other than that, I’ll catch ya around later this week, probably.
NaNoWha?
Until today, I’d not written a single NaNo word since Friday the 3rd. But I chugged out a bunch of words today. Still, it’s hectic and choppy and I can’t manage any consistency. Waah Waah, right?
Can I CATCH up? I dunno. But I’m not GIVING up. If K.J. Johnson can do it, I can do it.
NaNoMadness: The Second Coming
NaNoWriMo update:
I’ve put myself in a massive NaNoWriMo hole, but today (Saturday) has been a stellar day and my lovely wife has encouraged me to spend the evening writing, and I have, so I’ve come back within striking distance of my daily goal, although I’m still down below the target average.
Ah well. Maybe I should go back and write more instead of blogging.
Hey, Chris and KJ both said it helps to listen to cool instrumental music as you write. They’re right, as usual. I’ve been listening to Symphonic Pink Floyd and the Last of the Mohicans soundtrack while writing tonight, and Gladiator is up next. It helps immensely!
If you care, my NaNo progress bar is over to the right. I’ll try to keep it updated for the two of you who are reading this.
Say a few goods words to Lady Brighid on my behalf, if you get a chance.

Well, a couple weeks ago I put that “NaNoWriMo 2006 Participant” graphic up here on the blog, and intended to try to, you know, participate. But I did nothing whatsoever to prepare. And so yesterday, November 1st, I was pretty much not going to try this year.
Then I heard Chris Miller’s opening sermon on the NaNoMonkeys inaugural podcast.
And now, I’m going to try. So here I go with Vegas After Midnight: Tales from the
Madness.
I got 300 words written last night. It’s not enough, but it’s something.
I’ll keep you posted. I’ve got a progress bar up over on the right.
