I’ve been trying to create a new logo for my freelance portfolio and biz cards, and although I am pretty sure this particular effort is a bit to busy to work as is, I’m also pretty sure I’m taking it in the right direction – I just need to make a version that is more minimalistic, without the gradients and shadow-stuff, probably. But it has the elements I want – wings to symbolize inspiration, a stylized gear to symbolize application, and splats of colorful paint for a playful artistic effect. Here it is. What do you think?

Yup, you got it right, too busy, but I like the general feel. Maybe the cogwheel incorporates the splotches?

Yes, I agree, too busy. Now the splotches behind the cog make the spokes of the cog stand out more, but the playful effect of the paint is lost. I think Daniel has a good suggestion as far as getting either the cog or the wings to be paint splattered.
Ok, I just took another look, call me crazy, but could you work this into a Rorschach-type image that ‘reads’ as cog + wings? The ink could be paint that was dropped onto the card before it was folded. Too crazy? Too difficult?
Follow your bliss,
JJ
